Celeste Allen Novak Architects evaluated the viability of the rehabilitation and conversion of a 3- story, 30,000sf existing historic building into a shelter that will be made of emergency housing for the homeless as well as transitional and affordable housing for those in need in Hillsdale County.

The Shelter will include apartments for families as well as single people who are need of housing. The new renovated facility will help with a great need in Hillsdale County.

The challenges discovered by the code review using the State Rehabilitation Code for housing, environmental,  mechanical, structural and fire review for the building, assisted the client to research alternative structures for their shelter program.  A careful study of this occupied building allowed the client to re-evaluate their plans for the future as the study proved the costs to exceed the advantages of using this building as a shelter facility.
